Day 11 Whanganui
After staying the night in Pipiriki the next day was quite a nice ride through rolling hills into a gorgeous town, Whanganui. I would quite happily have stayed here for a couple of days, but it wasn’t to be. I treated myself to a luxurious night in a YHA, Bremer House, a beautfiul bulding and gardens which had the friendliest chicken ever. The next day, after a delicious Vietnamese meal, a rested body, a new chain and brake pads and then it was time to get back on the road – at least, after breakfast.
I took a few pictures of other bikes today, just to give an idea of the variety people are riding on. Mostly hard-tails but a reasonable number o gravel bikes too.

Day 12 Rangiwahia
Wanganui has a great idea, an elevator taking you up 66 meters to see the view, it takes you into a planned garden suburb. it was meant to have tennis courts, cricket greens, open spaces and cafes to avoid the squalor starting in other NZ towns. It worked very well and is still a beautiful part of town.
The rest of the day was uneventful, but pleasant, road riding.

Day 13 Pahiatua
About 130km down the road was Pahiatua, it’s very green around here, obviously being enjoyed by a great many sheep! The ride is really well known, meeting people along the way has been a real pleasure, both other cyclists and locals. On this section a local group took advantage of the descending crowds with fresh muffins and hard boiled eggs, very much appreciated! On the way a couple who own the old butter factory were giving free water, apples and plums to riders – fresh fruit is such a luxury when you’re cycling.
The town has great Freedom camping here. $10 and $2 for a hot shower in the town hall.
