Last week I went to see the Fabulous Mr Percival at the Vanguard in Newtown. This was a very different sort of vocal act and definitely something worth a look.

The Vanguard is a good feeling venue, almost like something in Melbourne rather than the normal Sydney grunge or over the top with nothing in between. If only they would put the main acts on a little earlier, an hour and a half of a support act is way too much and the food is overpriced for what you get.
My Percival’s act is purely vocal, he works using many loop samplers and building up layers as he goes, his voice is fantastic and he is a superb performer. The act is supposingly jazz, but I wouldn’t have called it that, maybe more blues / gospel. Overall his act was one of the more enjoyable I have seen in quite a while, I would recommend him to anyone, although perhaps not at the Vanguard….
